Maya’s Story

When Maya first walked through the doors of The PLACE’s Drop-In Center, she was tired, cold, and clutching her four-year-old daughter, Emma. They had been living out of Maya’s car for weeks, eating what they could, parking where they felt safe enough to rest. She came to the Drop-In Center simply hoping for a meal and a warm shower. What she found was so much more.

Our team welcomed Maya and Emma with kindness and care, helping them connect with essential resources, childcare, and a case manager who walked beside them every step of the way. In time, they transitioned into The Launchpad, our 50-unit supportive housing community for young people. For the first time in years, Maya and Emma had a place of their own, a home filled with warmth, laughter, and possibility.

Just last week, Maya and Emma dressed up for Halloween, something they hadn’t been able to do in years. Emma wore a sparkly witch costume, and Maya said it was the first time she’d seen her daughter’s eyes light up with excitement in a long time. “Last year, we were just trying to stay warm,” Maya shared. “This year, we got to make a memory.”

Because of your generosity, families like Maya and Emma’s are finding what it means to truly be home for the holidays — safe, supported, and surrounded by community.
